Gordon Lightfoot composed Early Morning Rain in 1964. The song was inspired by a lonely period in his life when he used to go out near the runway at LAX airport on rainy days to watch the approaching aircraft. Although he recorded this song on his debut album in 1966, versions of the song were first recorded and released in 1965 by Ian & Sylvia, Peter, Paul & Mary, and Judy Collins. Lightfoot later released a new version of the song for his 1975 album “Gord’s Gold”. Many great artists have recorded this song through the years including Elvis Presley, Jerry Reed, Jerry Lee-Lewis, Paul Weller and others. It is one of the few covers of contemporary songs that Dylan recorded during the Self Portrait sessions.

“I chose this song because I’m a huge Gordon Lightfoot fan and this song really spoke to me with the imagery of the lyrics and strong melody.” – Tom Dalton
